Persimmons
Two entirely separate species, two continents, and a native American fruit older than European contact.
Origin & Domestication
Persimmon actually refers to two genuinely distinct species with separate origins. The Asian persimmon (Diospyros kaki) originated in China, where wild trees have grown for more than ten thousand years according to ancient literature and archaeological findings; real domestication began during the Qin and Han dynasties, roughly 221 BCE to 220 CE. The American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) is entirely unrelated in origin, native to the central and eastern United States from Connecticut south to Florida and west to Kansas and Texas, and was used as a food source by Native American tribes for centuries before European contact. Both species share the genus name Diospyros, from Greek words meaning divine fruit, but arrived at that shared name independently.
The word persimmon itself comes from putchamin (also rendered pasiminan or pessamin), a word from Powhatan, an Algonquian language, meaning a dry fruit — a genuinely American linguistic origin, distinct from the Asian fruit's Greek-derived genus name.
How It Spread
Asian persimmon cultivation spread from China to Japan around the 8th century CE, then reached the United States in the 1850s as seed brought back by Commodore Matthew Perry after his expedition opened trade with Japan.
The American persimmon never needed to spread anywhere — it was already established across its native range when European colonists arrived, and colonists quickly adopted it from Native American communities. Captain John Smith documented the fruit in 1609, describing how an unripe persimmon could "drive a man's mouth awry" while a ripe one was genuinely delicious, and naturalist William Bartram later called it simply a delicious fruit. Real, documented Native American culinary use included Cherokee, Comanche, Rappahannock, and Seminole communities eating the fruit fresh, drying it like prunes for winter storage, and — specifically among the Rappahannock — rolling it in cornmeal and brewing it into a beer.
Types & Notable Varieties
Persimmon varieties fall into astringent and non-astringent types, based on real, distinct underlying chemistry: astringent varieties must fully soften before eating or they cause an intensely puckering mouthfeel, while non-astringent varieties can be eaten firm, like an apple. Nearly all American persimmon varieties are astringent — real foragers specifically warn that the fruit isn't ready until it looks almost rotten and falls from the tree on its own, since even fruit that looks ripe on the branch is often still unbearably astringent.
Gosho, also called Giant Fuyu, is documented in real academic literature as the very first pollination-constant non-astringent (PCNA) Asian persimmon type ever recorded, dating to the 1600s in Japan.
Meader, an American persimmon variety, was bred by Elwyn Meader at the University of New Hampshire specifically for cold hardiness, first selected in Rochester, New Hampshire in 1947 and documented as able to withstand temperatures down to -25°F — a genuinely different breeding goal from the Asian persimmon varieties bred mainly in mild California and Florida climates.
Research & Breeding Programs
Most named American persimmon cultivars trace to individual collectors rather than formal university programs. Prok, a widely admired variety, was grown out by breeder George Slate from seed sent by collector Ralph Kreider, and its name is said to stand for Persimmon Ralph Kreider.
The Spanish Asian-persimmon variety Rojo Brillante, selected by growers south of Valencia in the 1960s, has driven Spain's rise as one of the world's leading persimmon producers, helped by later technology that removes its astringency artificially while the fruit is still crisp.
Good to Know
American persimmon trees are dioecious — individual trees are either male or female, and only rarely self-pollinating — while many Asian persimmon varieties can produce male, female, or self-fertile flowers on the very same tree, a real, practical difference in how each species needs to be planted for fruit.
American persimmon wood was historically prized for golf club heads (it was the original material for the "woods" in a golf bag before metal drivers), textile shuttles, and furniture veneer, and its seeds were used to make Civil War-era buttons and, when roasted, a coffee substitute.
