Adriatic JH

Adriatic JH (also known as JH Adriatic) was originally propagated by Joseph "Joe" Hood of Austin, Texas, from a mother tree already established on his property when he moved in — the source of the "JH" in its name. It is a standout selection within the green-skinned Adriatic fig group, with vibrant pale-green skin and a deep red pulp carrying a nuanced, berry-forward flavor. Some growers have speculated it may be the same as Green Ischia, though this has not been confirmed. The fruit matures from the last half of July into early August in Austin's hot, dry summers, which Hood himself noted is ideal timing to avoid the souring and leaf "rust" that can occur if heavy rain continues unabated during ripening. Leaf shape is one way growers distinguish it from the separate "Adriatic UCD" specimen: Adriatic JH tends toward 1-5 lobes (with or without "thumbs"), while Adriatic UCD consistently shows 5 lobes with thumbs. The tree is reliable and productive, and is considered one of the more popular light-skinned "Adriatic-type" figs among collectors, alongside relatives like White Madeira #1 and Green Ischia. It does not require pollination to fruit. Growers report it can be one of the more productive trees in a collection, and it develops real depth of flavor when allowed to ripen fully on the tree.
