Alphonso Mango

Alphonso is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, the Portuguese general who established colonial control over Goa in the 1500s, since Portuguese colonizers are credited with introducing grafting techniques that allowed Indian mango cultivation to develop named, propagated varieties rather than relying purely on seedling trees. It remains India's most prized commercial mango and is often the most expensive variety in export markets, with authentic Alphonso from the Ratnagiri region in particular commanding premium prices.
