Apollo Feijoa

Apollo was bred by Auckland nurseryman Hayward Wright, who spent decades importing and selectively breeding feijoa trees in New Zealand specifically for improved fruit quality, hardiness, and storage characteristics. By the 1980s, Apollo and Wright's other release Mammoth (also documented in this database) had become foundational to New Zealand's newly profitable commercial feijoa industry. The fruit is self-fertile, mid-season, with real documented average fruit weight of about 100 grams — large for its era — and is genuinely delicate and prone to bruising, a real practical trade-off against its size and sweetness. It is one of the most widely recommended feijoa varieties for home hedging in New Zealand today.
