Black Tartarian dates to the 1700s, likely originating in Russia or Central Asia before spreading through Western Europe and eventually to North America, and remains one of the oldest sweet cherry varieties still commonly grown today. Its very early ripening made it historically significant as one of the first cherries available each season, well before Bing and other mid-season varieties come in.
