Col de Dame Gris

Col de Dame Gris shares its Mallorca, Spain origin with the rest of the Col de Dame family, documented through Montserrat Pons' collection. Its French/Catalan name references the fruit's distinctive long neck, likened to the high collars fashionable among French royalty historically. The skin is greenish-purple, taking on a grayish ("grise") cast as it ripens, with small skin cracks and a dense, dark red interior with no seed crunch. Collectors describe a very rich, sweet taste with savory undertones — one grower specifically noted a version sourced from Baud nursery stock as "one of my favorites... not that late and absolutely delicious." It is a one-crop, common (self-fertile) fig, considered by many collectors to sit flavor-wise between its darker Noir and paler Blanc siblings.
