Craven's Craving

Craven's Craving was discovered by a fig collector known on forums as Padsfan, growing in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego, California. The tree was brought to San Diego by its original owner directly from Portugal; that owner, still living in the home at the time it was documented, did not know the variety's proper name and had never heard the term "Figo Preto" either, so it was recorded as an Unknown. Padsfan named it Craven's Craving specifically because the original owner had never shared cuttings before, making this collector's eventual propagation and distribution of it something worth naming. The fruit has black skin and a red interior, and tasters have specifically noted how closely it resembles Black Madeira/Figo Preto in appearance despite apparently being a genetically distinct variety. It is grown from a Portuguese immigrant's personal tree with real, if informally documented, ties to Portugal, though its precise formal variety identity remains unconfirmed.
