Goldfinger was bred by the Honduras-based FHIA breeding program specifically to resist Panama disease and other pathogens that have repeatedly threatened commercial banana cultivation since the mid-20th century, representing part of an ongoing, decades-long effort to develop banana varieties genetically resistant to the diseases that wiped out Gros Michel and now threaten Cavendish in turn.
