Hass Avocado

Hass was patented in 1935 by Rudolph Hass, a California mail carrier and amateur horticulturist who nearly cut down the tree it originated from after it failed to bud successfully when he tried grafting it — he only kept it because his children liked eating the fruit off the ungrafted seedling. That accidental preservation produced what is now, by a huge margin, the most widely grown avocado in the world, with virtually every commercial Hass tree today descending from cuttings of that single original backyard tree.
