Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry

Hinnomaki Red was developed in Finland by Finnish horticulturists in the mid-20th century, as part of a national breeding effort — associated with the country's Natural Resources Institute (Luke) — to create disease-resistant fruit cultivars suited to Finland's short growing seasons and harsh Nordic winters. That cold-climate breeding background gave it real, documented resistance to powdery mildew, generally considered stronger than many older English gooseberry varieties, which has made it a genuine favorite among organic growers specifically trying to avoid fungicide use. The fruit has deep red skin and is widely reported by growers to have a notably sweet flesh, though the skin itself carries real tartness — tasters specifically note this contrast between sweet interior and tart skin as a distinguishing trait of the variety.
