Jazz Apple

Jazz is the trademarked name for the cultivar Scifresh, developed through the same New Zealand breeding program that produced Envy, also documented in this database, both descending from Braeburn crossed with Royal Gala. Jazz reached commercial markets in the late 1990s, notably earlier than Envy, and became one of the first genuinely successful examples of a "club apple" — a variety whose planting rights are tightly controlled by the breeder or an associated grower cooperative rather than freely available to any orchard. That early, real commercial success is documented in horticultural trade circles as having helped convince other breeding programs worldwide to adopt similar branded, license-controlled release strategies for new apple varieties. It has become particularly well established in UK and European markets.
