Joan J Raspberry

Joan J was bred through a planned breeding program at Maidstone, in Kent, England, from a cross of the varieties Joan Squire and Teri-Louise. It became notable specifically for combining thornless canes with high yield and large, firm, easy-picking fruit that releases cleanly from the plant with small drupelets and good flavor — practical traits that made it a genuine favorite for home gardeners and pick-your-own growers wanting an early-ripening, low-effort raspberry. It fruits on primocanes (first-year canes) and can simply be mowed back each year rather than requiring the more careful floricane pruning some other varieties need.
