LSU Purple was released in 1991 by Louisiana State University, part of the university's fig breeding work focused on varieties suited to the Gulf Coast's humid growing conditions. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension describes it as relatively cold hardy and widely adapted across the Gulf Coast, with medium to dark purple skin, strawberry-colored flesh, and a mild, sweet flavor, noting good productivity in most years and a closed eye. It became, in AgriLife's words, "quickly becoming a standard in many fig growers' fields" across the region.
