Mammoth Feijoa

Mammoth was bred by Auckland nurseryman Hayward Wright from seedlings of the Choiceana variety, part of decades of selective breeding work that helped establish New Zealand's commercial feijoa industry by the 1980s. True to its name, the fruit is genuinely large — up to 8.5 ounces, resembling Coolidge in shape — with thick, somewhat wrinkled skin and good flavor, though the flesh is somewhat gritty and the fruit is documented as having a real, notable tendency toward empty locules (hollow segments) inside. It matures early-to-mid season, is self-fertile though it bears larger fruit with cross-pollination, and is genuinely softer and a worse shipper than the related Triumph variety. The tree grows upright to about 10 feet and is strong-growing.
