Montmorency originated in France, named after the Montmorency valley, and became by far the dominant tart cherry in American cultivation after being brought over by early settlers — the overwhelming majority of tart cherries grown in the US today, whether for pie filling, juice, or dried snacks, are Montmorency, making it arguably the single most commercially important sour cherry variety in the world.
