NC-1 Pawpaw

✓ Verified
North Carolina, USA

NC-1 was introduced in 1976 by grower-enthusiast Doug Campbell near Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario — near the northern edge of where pawpaws can reliably be grown. It is a seedling of the Davis variety, reportedly hand-pollinated with Overleese pollen, according to fellow pawpaw historian John Gordon's account, making it a genuine second-generation selection rather than an independent wild find. Long-term Missouri trials found NC-1 among the better performers for both fruit size and reliable production, and it is commonly recommended for colder growing regions given its Ontario origins.
