Ondata Fig

Ondata is a French fig, an extremely rare, relatively new discovery by a grower named Thierry from Bandol, in the south of France, and part of the Figues du Monde (FDM) collection that has been introduced to US growers in recent years. The skin is black to grayish-black, attractively mottled with white spots, and thin, with sweet red pulp inside. Growers describe a good berry flavor. Ondata has a notably tight eye and has been specifically noted for not splitting even in wet, humid conditions — a genuine practical advantage in rainy climates where many other varieties sour or split. The tree is described as having moderate vigor with big, broad leaves and a somewhat spreading, compact growth habit. Fruit yield has reportedly been high and consistent, and the fruit is said to maintain quality late into fall and can dry on the tree.
