Pixwell Gooseberry

Pixwell was selected in Brigham City, Utah, in 1890, from a cross of the Houghton and Downing varieties — both themselves American gooseberries (Ribes hirtellum), the species native to the northeastern United States and eastern Canada, generally more disease-resistant than European gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa) stock. Pixwell shows real, documented resistance to both white pine blister rust and powdery mildew, which made it a genuinely practical choice for American growers even during the decades when Ribes cultivation carried real legal restrictions in many states. The fruit is light green ripening to a soft pink, round, about half an inch across; growers who pick it early get a tarter, more acidic berry, while those who leave it to fully ripen report a milder, sometimes mealy texture — a real, documented trade-off collectors discuss when deciding harvest timing.
