Poorman Gooseberry

Poorman is a genuine heirloom American gooseberry, believed to be a hybrid involving native US Ribes species, with real documented resistance to both white pine blister rust and powdery mildew. Multiple experienced growers, including several who directly compared it against Hinnomaki Red and Black Velvet in their own gardens, report that Poorman consistently produces sweeter, less sour fruit than those other varieties under the same growing conditions — one grower specifically attributed this to Poorman's native-species parentage giving it better heat tolerance. Left to hang fully ripe on the bush, the berries can become notably sweet and low in acid, though some growers report the variety can suffer from lower productivity for longer than other gooseberries before reaching full bearing.
