Bred at Washington State University in 1952 by crossing Bing with the variety Van, Rainier was named after Mount Rainier and became known for a delicate yellow-and-red skin that bruises easily — a real handling challenge that has historically limited its commercial shipping compared to Bing, but hasn't stopped it from becoming one of the most prized specialty cherries at farmers markets and premium grocers.
