Shenandoah was released by Neal Peterson, whose decades-long, self-funded pawpaw breeding program beginning in the 1980s is largely responsible for pawpaw's recent resurgence as a serious home-orchard fruit rather than just a wild foraged one — Peterson evaluated thousands of seedlings over more than 20 years before selecting his named releases, of which Shenandoah, bred specifically for a milder, more approachable flavor, remains one of the most widely recommended for beginners.
