Another Luther Burbank introduction from his Santa Rosa breeding program, Shiro was released in the early 1900s and named using the Japanese word for "white," referring to its pale yellow skin rather than true white coloring. It became one of the most reliably heavy-bearing plum varieties in cultivation, so productive that fruit thinning is considered essential to prevent limbs from breaking under the crop's own weight.
