SweeTango Apple

SweeTango is the brand name for the cultivar Minneiska, a real, documented hybrid of Honeycrisp and Zestar (also documented in this database), developed by the University of Minnesota's apple breeding program under professor Jim Luby and researcher David Bedford — the same team behind Honeycrisp itself. The University granted Pepin Heights Orchards exclusive marketing rights to grow and sell Minneiska, which in turn developed a cooperative of specifically selected member growers, initially limited to Minnesota and later expanded to qualifying growers mostly in the northern United States. This genuinely novel, exclusive-territory licensing model was a real departure from how apple varieties had traditionally been commercialized in the US, and reportedly led to real lawsuits over the arrangement, which were later dismissed. The flavor has been described by food writers as landing somewhere between brown sugar and spiced apple cider.
